The Finest Hotel in Kabul by Lyse Doucet has won the 2026 Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction. A richly crafted recent history of modern Afghanistan, and the many people who lived and worked there, the 2026 judges described it as “a perfect work of narrative non-fiction”

Lyse Doucet’s debut book The Finest Hotel in Kabul: A People’s History of Afghanistan is a richly crafted recent history of modern Afghanistan, told through the many people who lived and worked at the Inter-Continental Hotel in Kabul whilst surviving decades of turbulence.
