The alpine zone is usually defined as the area on a mountain between the upper limit of tree growth, the treeline, and where permanent snow begins. New Zealand’s alpine land includes parts of the Southern Alps in the South Island, and the central North Island. All of the images in this book were taken in the South Island, mostly between 1300-1600mts.

Some of New Zealand’s alpine flora are small and elusive, making them difficult to find. It takes time and commitment, searching the mountains in difficult terrain and all weather conditions, hoping to find a plant in perfect condition to photograph. Not all alpine plants flower every year, one never knows what each season will reveal until you venture out to look.

Rebecca Bowater grew up with a love of nature fostered by her parents – her father a botanist and her mother a horticulturist.

Through her passion for New Zealand alpine flowers, fungi and birds, Rebecca has received many awards, book credits and achieved Fellowship with the Photographic Society of New Zealand, for whom she is an accredited nature judge. She has also gained her letters AFIAP – ‘The International Federation of Photographic Art’.
Her great love for all nature has prompted travels to many of the world’s national parks.
